Working families call for further safety measures at all workplaces
Toledo, OH — On Monday evening, local workers, officials and faith leaders will gather at UAW Local 12 for a candlelight vigil to honor workers who have died or suffered illness or injuries while on the job.
Despite the progress we have made in making workplaces safer and protecting workers, too many people continue to be exposed to serious safety hazards like toxic silica dust, infectious diseases and workplace violence. Participants in this event will call to renew the fight for stronger protections for workers across the country and highlight improvements in job safety enforcement at OSHA and MSHA under President Obama, particularly for employers that repeatedly violate the law. Participants also will call on Republican lawmakers and business groups to stop blocking a new silica standard and other job safety protections that will save workers’ lives.
Eleven workers from Northwest Ohio have died on the job in the past year, including two firefighters.
