A Labor Day Message From Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga
As workers across Ohio get together to celebrate the Labor Day holiday and its 125th Anniversary, we should be mindful of the sacrifices made every day by those who make our economy run, our communities safe and our lives better as a result of their daily toils. They work with their hands and backs in factories and fields, on construction projects, deliver vital services, educate our children and perform jobs that are often taken for granted.
It has been the men and women of Labor that have continued to stand up and fight to protect our rights, the middle class and a shot at the American dream. Now, more and more working people want to join a union and public opinion is on our side. Just this week, sixty-four percent of Americans polled by Gallup approve of labor unions, one of the highest rates in half a century.
People want a voice at work and they recognize that there is power in a union. Workers are demonstrating every day that we are stronger together and are calling for safer workplaces, higher wages, better health care and retirement security. 2018 was the biggest year for collective action in a generation. And MIT found that more than 60 million workers would vote to join a union today if given the chance.
So as we enjoy spending time with family and friends this holiday weekend, let’s celebrate the work we do, re-commit our solidarity to the trade union movement and remember that we have the power to create the fair economy and just society that we want and need.
