(Columbus, Ohio ) – On Tuesday January 16th, State Senator Matt Huffman introduced Senate Resolution 5, a plan to redraw Ohio’s congressional districts after the 2020 Census.  In response to that development, Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga released the following statement:

“The plan introduced in the state senate will further extend the dysfunction that has characterized our congressional map for decades. Ohioans deserve a truly bipartisan process, one that creates fair districts so they can choose their elected officials instead of politicians choosing their voters. Senate Joint Resolution 5 falls well short of this most basic criteria to eliminate the unacceptable practice of gerrymandering.”

“The current rules have resulted in congressional districts drawn with more concern of political advantage than competiveness. This has resulted in hyper-partisan election results and has given us a Congress that maintains historically low approval numbers because it is unable to address our most basic problems and challenges. Senate Joint Resolution 5 does not require bipartisan approval, lacks transparency, continues to allow counties to be split in ways that lead to political manipulation, and creates an overly complicated process to put congressional maps in place.”

“While legislators want to rapidly pass this proposal to get it on the primary ballot in May, an issue of this magnitude deserves serious deliberation and discussion before passage. Ohioans deserve more than the political gamesmanship that this resolution represents and we urge the sponsor to work with his colleagues across the aisle in a serious attempt to create a fair and equitable congressional redistricting process.”
