(Columbus, Ohio ) – Congress today passed the final tax bill.  In response to that development, Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga released the following statement:

“The tax bill that Congress is sending to the president today represents a new low for our country and our democracy.  Instead of keeping the promises they made to win the last election, President Trump and congressional Republicans have opted to further rig our economy against working people in favor of corporate special interests and super-wealthy donors.  Congress had an opportunity to provide real tax relief to the people that need it most and instead passed a tax plan that would exacerbate income inequality, blow up deficits and will do little to grow our economy.”

“It was especially disheartening to watch the process with which this plan was developed.  Special interests lined up to insert their own self-serving provisions while working people were systematically shut out of the rushed and opaque process.  Too many of our representatives in Congress will personally benefit from the new rules while the people they are sworn to serve will lose.  Working people will now pay more taxes while corporations and billionaires will pay less.  The plan gives billions of tax giveaways to big corporations that outsource jobs and profits.  Republicans vowed in the last election to represent the forgotten men and women in our economy.  This unfair and unwise tax scheme will not deliver for working people and it seems that President Trump and Republicans in Congress have forgotten about us all over again.”
